You have heard "growth mindset" so many times it has lost all meaning. The Instagram version says praise effort and your child will thrive. The backlash says it is debunked pseudoscience and you have been duped. Neither is right — and neither helps you decide what to actually do at home on a Tuesday morning when your kid says "I'm just not a math person."
The research tells a more interesting and more useful story than either camp admits. Growth mindset is not magic. It is also not nothing. The truth is specific, nuanced, and actionable — and it is far more useful to an analytical parent than either the hype or the backlash. Here is what Dweck actually found, what the meta-analyses confirmed and challenged, and what it means for your homeschool.
What Dweck Actually Claimed
First, let's get the original theory right, because most of what circulates online is a caricature of it. In her foundational work, Carol Dweck defined two beliefs people hold about intelligence. A fixed mindset is the belief that intellectual ability is a stable trait — you're either smart or you're not. A growth mindset is the belief that intellectual abilities can be developed through effort, strategy, and help ([Dweck, 2006](https://psycnet.apa.org/record/2006-08575-000)). Her experimental research showed that students who hold growth beliefs tend to persist longer through difficulty, embrace challenge rather than avoid it, and interpret failure as information rather than identity.
Critically, Dweck never claimed mindset was the only thing that mattered, or that believing hard enough makes you good at calculus. She claimed it was one meaningful variable among many — and that it was teachable. That distinction matters, because the popular version dropped the nuance and turned "growth mindset" into a bumper sticker.
What the Meta-Analyses Found
In 2018, Sisk and colleagues published two meta-analyses in Psychological Science — pooling 273 studies with 365,915 students on the mindset-achievement relationship, and 43 studies with 57,155 students on intervention effectiveness. The results were sobering for the hype crowd: overall effects were weak for both the correlation between mindset and achievement and the effectiveness of mindset interventions ([Sisk et al., 2018](https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/0956797617739704)). Growth mindset is not the transformative force the TED talks suggested.
But — and this is the part the backlash crowd ignores — the meta-analysis also found that effects were larger for students who were academically at risk or from low socioeconomic backgrounds. The intervention does not do much for students who are already succeeding. It appears to matter most for students who have internalized a belief that they cannot improve — the exact students for whom a belief-shift could unlock effort they had given up on.

The strongest causal evidence came in 2019, when Yeager and colleagues published a pre-registered, nationally representative randomized controlled trial in Nature — the most prestigious scientific journal in the world. They tested a brief (less than one hour) online growth mindset intervention with 12,490 ninth-graders across 65 U.S. schools. The result: the intervention improved grades for lower-achieving students, particularly in schools where peer norms supported the growth message. The effect was 0.10 GPA points — modest, but causal and real in the right context ([Yeager et al., 2019](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-019-1466-y)). It did not help everyone. It helped the students who needed it most, in environments that reinforced the message.
The Critical Voice
In the interest of full honesty, the most rigorous skeptical analysis comes from Macnamara and Burgoyne (2023), published in Psychological Bulletin — one of psychology's most prestigious review journals. Their updated meta-analysis of growth mindset interventions found even smaller effects than Sisk when controlling for methodological quality, and raised concerns about publication bias and inconsistent measurement ([Macnamara & Burgoyne, 2023](https://alexanderpburgoyne.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Macnamara-et-al.-2022-Do-Growth-Mindset-Interventions-Impact-Students-Academic-Achievement.pdf)). This is the strongest critical case available, and it deserves to be taken seriously.
What it does not say is that growth mindset is fake. It says the effects are smaller than originally advertised, that many implementations are poorly designed, and that the field needs higher methodological standards. That is a call for better science, not a debunking.
Real Growth Mindset vs. False Growth Mindset
Yeager and Dweck addressed the controversies directly in a 2020 paper in American Psychologist, and their central point is one every parent should understand. They distinguish between real growth mindset — genuine belief-change about the nature of intelligence, paired with strategies for what to do when stuck — and what they call "false growth mindset": praising effort without actually changing the child's beliefs about whether ability can grow ([Yeager & Dweck, 2020](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6594552/)).
This distinction explains why so many classroom implementations failed. Teachers were told to "praise effort" and say "you can do anything!" — but they never taught children why the brain is capable of growth, or gave them strategies for how to grow when they hit a wall. Empty cheerleading is not a mindset intervention. It is noise.
How to Do It at Home
Three terms make the strategy clear. Growth mindset is the belief that intellectual abilities can be developed through effort, strategy, and help — not just "trying harder." Fixed mindset is the belief that intelligence is a stable trait you either have or don't. And false growth mindset is praising effort or using growth language without actually changing the underlying belief about whether ability is developable.

Based on what the evidence actually supports, three practices matter:
First, change the belief, not just the language. The intervention that works in the research teaches children why the brain grows with challenge — neurons form new connections when you struggle with something hard. This is not "you can do it!" — it is a specific, scientific explanation that gives the child a reason to believe effort works. Second, praise strategy, not effort alone. "You tried a different approach when you got stuck" is more useful than both "you're so smart" (fixed) and "you tried so hard" (effort without direction). The research shows that strategy-focused feedback produces better outcomes than generic effort praise. Third, normalize struggle as the learning signal. Growth mindset works when children interpret difficulty as information — "this is where my brain grows" — rather than as evidence of inability. The parent's job is to model this interpretation consistently, especially when the child wants to quit.
What to Avoid
The trap is the Empty Praise Trap — telling a child "just try harder" or "you can do anything you set your mind to" without teaching them why ability is developable or giving them strategies for when they are stuck. This is what the research calls false growth mindset, and it produces no measurable effect. If your growth mindset practice consists entirely of motivational language with no underlying belief-change or strategy instruction, it is not doing what you think it is doing.

Dweck's Mindset (the book) is worth reading in full rather than relying on the Instagram summary — it is more nuanced than the memes suggest and explicitly addresses the misapplications. Brainology and the PERTS MindsetKit are research-backed programs designed to teach children about neuroplasticity with the depth the evidence requires — not just slogans. And the simplest daily practice: "the power of yet." When your child says "I can't do this," add one word: "yet." It reframes difficulty as temporary rather than permanent, and it costs nothing.
